What does a car scrap yard in the Netherlands do?

A car scrap yard — in Dutch called an autosloperij or autodemontagebedrijf — is a certified company that takes in end-of-life vehicles, dismantles them professionally and recycles the materials. In the Netherlands, all car scrap yards are required to hold an RDW certification and operate in accordance with the European End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) Directive.

That means your car will be processed safely and environmentally responsibly — all hazardous fluids are drained and disposed of correctly, usable parts are removed for reuse, and the remaining metal is sent to a shredder facility where steel, aluminium and copper are recovered for new production.

Autosloopexpert has been doing this for over 30 years from our location in Barneveld. We collect scrap cars from all over the Netherlands and process them in accordance with all legal requirements.

When should you scrap your car in the Netherlands?

There are several common situations in which scrapping your car is the most practical and financially sensible option:

The repair costs exceed the car’s value
If the cost of repairing your car is higher than what the car is worth after repair, you are looking at what the Dutch call economisch total loss (economic total loss). In this case, selling your car to a scrap yard is almost always the smarter financial decision.

The APK (MOT equivalent) has expired
In the Netherlands, every car must have a valid APK — the Dutch equivalent of the MOT inspection. A car without a valid APK is not allowed on public roads. If the cost of repairs to pass the APK is disproportionate to the car’s remaining value, scrapping is the logical choice.

Your car has been declared total loss by your insurer
After an accident, your insurer may declare your car a total loss. You receive a pay-out, but the car must go. An RDW-certified scrap yard takes it in and handles all the paperwork.

Your car has been standing still for a long time
A car that is no longer driven but is still registered in your name keeps costing money — road tax (motorrijtuigenbelasting) and insurance keep running. The sooner you transfer the registration, the sooner those costs stop.

You are leaving the Netherlands
Many expats and international employees find themselves in a situation where they are relocating and need to dispose of their car quickly. Autosloopexpert provides a fast and hassle-free solution — we handle everything, including the official deregistration.

Frequently asked questions about car scrap yards in the Netherlands

Have questions about handing in your car at our scrap yard? We are happy to help. Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about our location, the handover process, and the options for collection and deregistration.

Do I need to bring my car to the scrap yard myself?

No. Autosloopexpert offers free collection anywhere in the Netherlands. We come to your address with a flatbed truck — even if your car is no longer driveable. You do not need to arrange towing or transport.

You need your kentekencard (vehicle registration card), your tenaamstellingscode (the transfer code on the registration card), and a valid form of ID. Do not have the transfer code? You can request a new one via mijn.rdw.nl or at an RDW service point.

After you agree to our quote, we typically collect within 1 to 2 business days. The handover itself takes only a few minutes — we process the RDW deregistration on the spot and pay you directly.

This depends on the specific situation. Please contact us via our contact page — we are happy to discuss the options for your specific case.
